'French Week'  (176 pages   15x21 cms)

This book provides ideas for organising a language themed week in school. This is a period (not necessarily a week) in which the French or Language department waives the normal syllabus or scheme of work and organises fun lessons and activities during its lesson periods. The school is decorated, the flag is flown and other departments are invited to join in.

Although the book is called French Week the week need not be based on French – my ideas and examples are in French but they could be adapted to any language, Ancient or Modern. Similarly, you might feel that a week is too long. I urge you to spread it over more than one day but a few days would probably suffice if time is limited.

This book is arranged in Parts.

Part l is a general introduction to and description of French Week.

Part ll discusses what needs to be done in advance in order to set up your Week.

Part lll talks about ideas in general for class activities during lesson periods both in and out of the classroom.

Part lV looks at the wider picture and considers people who might be affected by the Week.

Part V considers general ambience and suggests some background activities and competitions which could be set up and run outside lesson time.

Then there is an Appendix which supplements the main activities suggested in the body of the book. There are quiz questions, rules for playing Boules, a list of Proverbs, a selection of Scavenger Hunt lists, suggestions for competitions and so on.

Finally there is an extra section called Other Departments and Areas. This contains suggestions for other departments who would like to join in French Week and would welcome ideas on what to do in their lessons. They are straightforward ideas, easy to implement and in line with the subject concerned.

Any examples and lists are in French as it was felt that a multi-lingual approach would be clumsy and not very reader-friendly. The ideas can of course be adapted to any other language and the books have in fact been bought by teachers of Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German and Latin as well as French.
