Sally Allport’s book is essentially a practical, hands-on resource book for language teachers.

It is a collection of short games and simple activities for use in the classroom. Most need little or no preparation or props and all are invaluable aids to lightening a lesson, revising or introducing a point, or simply making the best of the time available where lessons have been curtailed or disrupted.

Many of the ideas in the book are old favourites but it is useful for older teachers to have them collected together as reminders, and they should provide new teachers with a source of ideas while they build up their own repertoire and confidence.

The book is divided into VII sections or parts, as well as an Introduction and an Appendix.

Each section starts with its own brief  discussion and contains clear  instructions for a number of classroom games and activities.

There are further pages of general ideas and observations throughout. The reader is encouraged to develop his own repertoire of classroom games and activities.

Introduction and advice on using the book.

Part I  Suggestions for a variety of activities ranging from making up aide-mémoires  to reading Tintin or analysing recipes. The reader is encouraged to develop his own repertoire and there are ideas for possible sources of materials and lines of thought.

Part II  A discussion on the role of Supply Teachers and some of the problems they face. Ideas for strategies and suitable activities.

Part IIIa  A large number of truly impromptu games needing no  props or preparation.

Part IIIb  A number of games and activities needing simple props or prepared sheets.

Part IVa Suggested activities for small groups or pairs.

Part IVb  Suggested activities for individual work.

Part V A discussion of the value of the Class Magazine as a group activity. There are numerous ideas for magazine features and items, together with examples of puzzles and riddles.

Appendix  Lists of useful phrases for the various activities, lists of proverbs and idioms, a selection of recipes, the words of La Marseillaise, and  100 questions and answers for quizzes or games needing questions.

Most of the suggested activities in the book are readily adaptable to suit a range of topic or ability and there are frequent indications of how and where they can be adapted for a Mixed Ability group.

Although all examples are in French for simplicity, the book could be used by teachers of any language and has in fact been bought by teachers of Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German and Latin as well as French.
